Spaniard Denia becomes the first foreigner ever to manage the Czech national team

Czech football federation has announced the appointment of Spanish coach Santi Denia as its new national team manager, marking a historic milestone as the first foreigner to lead the Czech squad. The 52-year-old Denia signed a two-year contract with an option for extension, succeeding Miroslav Koubek, who stepped down after the 2026 World Cup, where the Czech team was eliminated in the group stage. Denia, a former youth coach for Spain’s national teams, will take charge of his first match with the Czech Republic in September, when the team hosts Croatia on September 26 and England three days later. His tenure begins with the Czech Republic competing in the Nations League, where they will face world and European champions Spain, offering Denia an opportunity to test his tactical acumen against one of his former colleagues, Luis de la Fuente. “I am honored to be here,” Denia stated. “Czech football has a rich history, and I am highly motivated by this project. My sole wish is to start work as soon as possible.” Denia’s coaching career includes leading the Spanish Olympic team to gold at the Paris 2024 Games. He spent much of his playing career with Atlético Madrid from 1995 to 2004 and won the La Liga title with the club in 1996. He represented Spain internationally twice.
