South Zone Cultural Centre starts three-day workshop and cultural event

The South Zone Cultural Centre in Thanjavur launched a three-day cultural initiative on Wednesday, August 13, 2026, at the Dr. MGR Home and Higher Secondary School for the Speech and Hearing Impaired. The event, designed to foster artistic engagement among students with speech and hearing impairments, included workshops and performances aimed at enhancing their creative expression and self-confidence. The programme began with a dedicated folk arts training session, followed by an exhibition showcasing the work of Kavya S. Nath, a hearing-impaired artist from Alappuzha, Kerala. Additional activities included a folk-dance teaching workshop and a traditional Tamil Nadu folk dance performance. The schedule continued through Thursday, featuring a caricature workshop and a Puducherry folk performance, offering participants opportunities to explore diverse forms of visual and performing arts. On Friday, the agenda included a clay modelling art workshop and a mime performance, further diversifying the range of creative experiences available. The event concluded with a valedictory ceremony scheduled for Saturday, August 15, at 8 a.m., marking the culmination of the three-day cultural programme. Latha Rajendran, the founding principal and director of the school, emphasized the significance of these events in providing students with platforms for self-expression and social interaction. She noted that such initiatives help build confidence and encourage connections among the participants, who often face challenges in accessing mainstream cultural activities.
