SoundCloud acquires decentralized music platform Nina Protocol months after its shutdown

SoundCloud has acquired Nina Protocol, a decentralized music platform that ceased operations earlier this year, according to a press release issued Wednesday. The acquisition marks SoundCloud's second major move in recent months, following its purchase of AI-driven music discovery startup Musiio in 2022. Nina Protocol, which operated until May 28, was known for enabling independent artists to retain full control over their revenue and manage their own digital storefronts without reliance on conventional streaming services. Nina Protocol was founded in 2021 by independent musicians Jack Callahan, Mike Pollard, and Eric Farber. The platform leveraged the Solana blockchain for efficient, low-cost transactions and utilized Arweave for secure, long-term storage of music files and associated metadata. This infrastructure allowed artists to maintain direct connections with their audiences while ensuring transparency and sustainability in their earnings. However, despite these advantages, the company faced challenges in establishing a viable business model and ultimately decided to shut down its operations. As part of the acquisition, SoundCloud will assume ownership of Nina Protocol’s editorial archive and “genre map,” which encompasses a wealth of music journalism, artist profiles, and cultural insights. These resources aim to enhance SoundCloud’s ability to identify and promote emerging talent, furthering its commitment to supporting independent creators. In a statement, SoundCloud CEO Eliah Seton emphasized the importance of honoring Nina Protocol’s contributions and continuing its mission of empowering artists. “Together, we’ll help more independent artists build deeper relationships with fans, unlock new ways to earn, and access the tools they need to grow sustainable careers on their own terms,” he said. To facilitate a smooth transition, SoundCloud has developed a migration tool allowing artists to transfer their existing content to the SoundCloud platform. Additionally, affected artists will receive a complimentary SoundCloud Artist subscription through the end of the year, granting them access to advanced monetization options and tools designed to foster audience engagement and growth. The acquisition underscores SoundCloud’s strategic shift toward becoming a more comprehensive ecosystem for independent musicians. By integrating elements of decentralization and direct fan interaction, the company aims to address gaps left by traditional streaming models.
