In response to global challenges like housing shortages and environmental pollution, architects Oscar Andrés Méndez and engineer Isabel Cristina Gámez developed an innovative construction system using recycled plastic bricks that interlock like Lego pieces. Their Colombian company, Conceptos Plásticos, transforms waste materials such as plastic bags, food containers, and shampoo bottles into durable building blocks made from 95% recycled plastic. These bricks allow homes to be constructed in under five days at a significantly lower cost compared to traditional methods. The structures are earthquake-resistant, fireproof, well-insulated, and designed to last over 200 years. The technology has been used to build more than 50 houses and schools in Colombia, and it was also adopted by UNICEF in Ivory Coast to address issues related to plastic waste and poor infrastructure in rural areas.
