Spain has introduced stricter smoking bans, affecting both tourists and locals, with severe penalties for violations. The new regulations, set to take effect after their final approval by parliament and publication in the official gazette, will significantly alter public behavior in areas such as cafes, restaurants, beaches, public pools, sports fields, national parks, and open spaces during public events. Smoking is now prohibited in these locations, including outdoor terraces of eateries, coastal and river beaches, public swimming pools, and sports grounds. The law also extends to protected zones around entrances to public buildings, hospitals, schools, libraries, and children's playgrounds, requiring a 15-meter buffer zone. The reform marks a comprehensive overhaul of tobacco product regulations, treating electronic cigarettes and nicotine-containing products equally to traditional tobacco items. This includes vaporizers, water pipes, and all devices mimicking smoking actions. The government aims to protect minors by explicitly banning tobacco use for individuals under 18 years old. Previously, laws only restricted sales to minors, but now, even recreational use by young people will carry legal consequences. Fines for violations range from €200 to as high as €600,000 depending on the severity of the offense. Young offenders face minimum fines of €200, though they may opt for community service instead of monetary penalties. Health officials emphasize that tobacco causes approximately 50,000 deaths annually in Spain. The Ministry of Health seeks to drastically increase smoke-free zones and safeguard children and youth through these measures. The law will come into force 20 days after its parliamentary approval and official gazette publication. Restaurants and other establishments will have exactly two months to install signs indicating new smoke-free areas. Despite opposition from some political factions, which argue for designated smoking areas to support the hospitality sector, the government remains firm on its plan. Spain aims to position itself among leading nations in tobacco control efforts. The changes are part of broader initiatives to align with international health standards and reduce public health risks associated with tobacco use.
