Eight years after the tragic collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, which claimed 43 lives, a court trial concluded against individuals responsible for the safety and maintenance of the bridge. The autostrada viaduct collapsed into the sea on August 14, 2018, during a storm, causing cars to fall and resulting in fatalities. A new bridge was constructed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, designed by engineer Riccardo Morandi, who had built the original in his sixties. The prosecution took four years to prepare charges and initiate the trial, which ended yesterday. Out of 57 accused, 32 were convicted, with total prison sentences exceeding 400 years.
