Smart #5: A whole different story, focusing on power and comfort

The new Smart #5 has arrived, marking a bold departure from the brand’s traditional identity. This electric SUV, with dimensions approaching five meters, offers a power output of over 587 horsepower and features a fast-charging capability of up to 400 kilowatts. The vehicle's cabin is described as spacious and luxurious, comparable to that of a luxury sedan. The #5 represents the third major model in Smart's new lineup, following the #1 and #3 models, and signals a definitive shift away from its origins as a compact city car. Smart, founded in 1994 through a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch, has long been associated with small, efficient urban vehicles. However, the introduction of the #5 marks a strategic pivot toward larger, more powerful electric vehicles aimed at a broader market. The Summit Edition variant tested by journalists includes all-wheel drive with dual motors, a battery capacity of 100 kWh, and a claimed range of 540 kilometers. It is priced at €59,176, positioning it as a premium offering within the brand’s evolving portfolio. The Smart #5 measures 470 centimeters in length, 192 centimeters in width, and 171 centimeters in height, with a wheelbase of 290 centimeters. These dimensions place it within the mid-sized SUV category, competing directly with models such as the Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The design philosophy of the #5 follows the “Love, Pure, Unexpected” concept, emphasizing sophisticated lines and elegant surfaces. The front fascia features elongated, illuminated headlights and a flat, closed grille that enhances aerodynamics. The doors lack window frames, reminiscent of certain sports coupés, while the panoramic roof extends nearly the entire length of the cabin. A notable detail is the placement of the Smart logo on the wheel covers, which remains vertical regardless of the wheel's rotation. The Summit Edition distinguishes itself with 20-inch alloy wheels featuring special finishes, identifying badges, and aesthetic elements that give it a slightly more adventurous character compared to lower-tier versions. These include a roof rack, side steps, and black plastic protection. Inside, the Smart #5 offers an experience that reflects the brand’s transformation. The cabin is spacious, well-lit, and constructed using high-quality materials such as leather upholstery and oak wood inserts. The dashboard features a 13-inch OLED display paired with a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, both standard on the Summit Edition. The user interface is developed using Unreal Engine, commonly used in video game production, resulting in smooth and detailed graphics. A 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display projects information directly into the driver’s field of view, one of the largest available in this class. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via wireless connectivity, along with a voice assistant and over-the-air software updates. The Sennheiser audio system, featuring 20 speakers, is included starting from the Premium trim level, delivering exceptional sound quality suitable for long trips. Front seats feature zero-gravity technology, offering adjustable heating and ventilation, anatomical contours designed to reduce fatigue during extended drives. Rear seats are also heated and equipped with adjustable backrests, sun visors, and integrated LED lighting. The cabin can be converted into a sleeping area by reclining the front seats, useful during charging breaks, and includes a projector for entertainment purposes.
