Slovenian Firefighters Help in Italy and Croatia

Slovenski gasilci so pomagali v Italiji in na Hrvaškem pri potiskanju požarov. Slovenija je aktivirala protokol o čezmejnem sodelovanju in poslala ekipo novogoriških gasilcev. Požari so bili zelo intenzivni, z visoko temperaturo in hitrim razširjem, kar je predstavljalo ogromno izziv. Gasilci so prednostno reševali živeča bitja in stavbe, medtem ko so nekatera hiša ostala zgorela zaradi zaraščenosti.

Firefighting efforts continue in Kranjska Gora despite recent rainfall, with crews working to extinguish residual flames in a remote area above Srednji Vrh. The fire was first detected early Friday morning in the forest above Gozd Martuljak. Over the past few days, aerial support from Air Tractor aircraft significantly dampened the blaze, but today’s firefighting operations rely solely on a helicopter drawing water from Lake Jasna. Ground teams have been digging trenches to combat underground fires, which are known to persist longer than surface blazes. According to Jožef Lavtižar, commander of the Kranjska Gora Firefighters Association, there are still small hotspots on an area less than one hectare in size that need to be fully extinguished. Although evening rain on Tuesday did little to aid the effort due to minimal precipitation, firefighters remain optimistic that the operation will conclude soon. As of today, 22 firefighters are actively engaged on site, continuing work initiated on Tuesday after heavy watering on Monday. The fire, believed to have started from lightning strike, burned over 150 by 200 meters of land. Rainfall overnight into Saturday helped quench much of the fire, leaving only isolated hotspots to address. However, a drone survey on Monday afternoon revealed renewed activity, prompting continued firefighting efforts on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Slovenia has deployed its firefighting resources internationally, sending three Air Tractor aircraft and a team of Novo Mesto firefighters to assist Italy in battling a large wildfire near the town of Amaro in the Veneto region. General Director of the Slovenian Rescue Service Leon Behin confirmed that the three Slovenian planes arrived in Italy on Thursday following a request for aerial support. The fire spans more than ten hectares and affects multiple locations, primarily higher vegetation areas. Visibility on the ground has been limited due to low wind causing smoke to linger, delaying initial operations. In addition to the aircraft, Slovenian ground support teams, coordinators, and firefighters are present at the scene. A Slovenian drone is also being used to ensure safer flight conditions. Of the three planes, two are expected to continue firefighting efforts, while the third may return to Slovenia depending on the situation. The duration of the intervention depends on both the status of the fire and the availability of aerial support within Italy. In Croatia, a major wildfire broke out late Thursday night in the area of Pučišća on the island of Brač, threatening homes and industrial zones. Croatian firefighters managed to prevent the fire from reaching residential areas, though they had to evacuate approximately 50 people, mostly tourists, from around 20 buildings. According to reports from the Croatian press agency HINA, citing firefighters from Supetar, the evacuated individuals have since returned to their accommodations. After nearly 13 hours of fighting the fire amid strong winds and storms, firefighters succeeded in containing the blaze with the help of six aircraft. Currently, two Canadian helicopters are assisting in the containment efforts. The fire destroyed over 250 hectares of dense fir forest. Forecasters predict strong winds overnight, potentially reigniting the fire, leading to extended firefighter presence on-site through the night. The involvement of Slovenian firefighting units abroad highlights the international cooperation in managing wildfires, especially in regions with challenging terrain. Marko Adamič, deputy commander of the Slovenian Firefighters Association and head of the tactical unit in Sežana, emphasized the importance of aerial firefighting in such scenarios. He noted how quickly the fire spread due to lower vegetation, high temperatures, and favorable wind conditions, creating an intense firestorm. Despite the challenges posed by extreme heat, temperatures exceeding 800 degrees Celsius, firefighters prioritize saving human lives, animals, and structures. Some houses were abandoned or heavily overgrown, making them particularly difficult to extinguish. The rapid response and international collaboration underscore the critical role of cross-border assistance in mitigating large-scale wildfires. On the other hand, in Kranjska Gora, the focus remains on completing the local firefighting mission. With the combination of aerial and ground efforts, including trench digging and targeted watering, authorities are confident that the remaining hotspots can be addressed swiftly. The ongoing efforts reflect the persistent nature of underground fires, requiring sustained attention even after visible flames have been extinguished. As the situation evolves, further updates are expected regarding the progress made in both domestic and international firefighting operations.

Slovenian firefighters fly three planes to help put out a massive fire in Italy

A massive fire rages near the Slovenian border in Italy, making it difficult to extinguish storms

Firefighters in Caravanas Helped by Rain and Air

Policija poziva uporabnike naravnih površin k odgovornemu ravnanju.

The rain from yesterday was not enough, the firefighting continues at Kranjska Gora
