Slovenian beekeepers go to the Vatican to be received by the Pope

Slovenian beekeepers have arrived in Vatican City for a historic meeting with Pope Francis, marking the first official private audience exclusively reserved for beekeepers. The event, which took place during the summer, was organized by the European Beekeeping Union, with support from the Slovenian Beekeepers Association. According to officials from the association, this gathering represents a unique opportunity to highlight the importance of bees and their products to global awareness. The meeting was preceded by a special mass held at Borgo Laudato S’, where representatives from around the world gathered for a two-day conference. The mass was led by Cardinal Baggio, who emphasized the spiritual and ecological significance of bees. This event coincided with the annual congress of the European Beekeeping Union, drawing participants from multiple countries. The beekeepers were invited to share insights on the role of bees in environmental sustainability and food production, while also seeking the pope’s support in promoting responsible consumption of bee products. The Slovenian delegation, led by Boštjan Noč, head of the Slovenian Beekeepers Association and a member of the European Beekeeping Union, played a central role in organizing the event. Noč noted that such an audience with the pope had never been granted to beekeepers before, making the occasion both unprecedented and deeply symbolic. He explained that the goal was to educate the public about the vital role of bees in maintaining biodiversity and producing essential foods, such as honey, wax, and pollen. During the audience, the beekeepers presented Pope Francis with a specially crafted candle made in Polzela, Slovenia. In addition to the candle, the beekeepers requested the pope’s assistance in raising awareness about the challenges facing bee populations, including habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.
