Scientists at the University of Osaka developed a new type of luminescent organic crystal that becomes significantly brighter and changes color from blue to yellow under pressure. This effect occurs due to the unique structure of the molecule, which is composed of phenanthrene and anthracene units arranged in a slender configuration. When subjected to pressure in a diamond anvil cell, the crystal's fluorescence intensity increased by 1.7 times, and its emission wavelength shifted by 131 nm, demonstrating exceptional sensitivity. The study highlights that the slenderness of the molecule, rather than its size, is crucial for these effects. The research was published in the Journal of Materials Chemistry C.
