Singer S Janaki dies; CM Vijay, Rajinikanth mourn Nightingale of South India

Veteran playback singer S Janaki, affectionately known as the "Nightingale of South India," passed away at the age of 88 in Mysore on July 11, 2026. Her death has prompted widespread mourning among prominent figures in Indian politics and entertainment, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, actor Rajinikanth, and other industry stalwarts such as Kamal Haasan and Chiranjeevi. According to Appolo Hospital, Janaki died around 7:30 pm on July 11. Her funeral arrangements were being finalized, though specific details remained undisclosed. Tributes poured in from across the country, with political leaders and celebrities expressing deep sorrow over her passing. Chief Minister Palaniswami posted on his social media account, calling her departure “the end of a remarkable era in Indian cinema and music.” He highlighted her impact beyond her native region, noting how her voice resonated with Malayalis despite her origins in Andhra Pradesh. Rajinikanth, one of India’s most iconic actors, shared a heartfelt message on his X account, stating, “May her soul, who delighted generations of people with her honey-sweet voice, attain peace.” Similarly, Kamal Haasan expressed his grief, writing, “The song will forever keep resounding. Where shall I seek that love, Mother? An inconsolable sorrow exists for many.” Chiranjeevi, another leading actor, described Janaki’s influence on his own career, saying her voice “breathed life into the many emotions we brought to life on screen.” Janaki’s legacy extends far beyond her professional achievements. In 2013, she declined the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor, citing that she deserved the Bharat Ratna, the nation’s highest civilian award. She argued that her contributions to Indian music had been overlooked for too long. Despite this, her work earned her four National Film Awards and 33 State Film Awards, underscoring her lasting influence on the film industry. Born on April 23, 1938, in Pallapatla, present-day Andhra Pradesh, Janaki began her musical journey at a young age. Her early talent was evident when she performed on stage at the age of nine. Though she received foundational instruction from a Nadaswaram vidwan named Paidiswamy, she did not pursue formal classical training. Instead, she focused on developing her unique vocal style, which would later become a hallmark of South Indian cinema. Janaki’s marriage to V Ramprasad in 1959 proved instrumental in her career. He supported her professionally and accompanied her during numerous recording sessions. Tragically, he passed away in 1997 due to a cardiac arrest. Despite personal losses, Janaki continued to thrive in her craft, becoming a beloved figure in the industry. Known for her linguistic versatility, Janaki was fluent in Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi, allowing her to seamlessly transition between regional dialects in her performances. This skill contributed significantly to her wide appeal across South India. Her career, spanning over six decades, saw her record songs in six languages within her first year of professional work in 1957. Janaki officially retired from playback singing in 2016 after a career marked by dedication and excellence. Her passing leaves a void in the Indian music scene, but her songs continue to echo through generations, a testament to her enduring artistry.
