According to the Carabineri of Latisana, the youngest child, a five-and-a-half-year-old boy, was swept away by the current while playing with his sisters, aged nine and eleven. The father immediately entered the water and managed to bring the boy back to shore. The two older children were assisted by their mother and others nearby. After rescuing his son, the man disappeared into the river. Firefighters, upon learning he was missing, launched immediate search operations. His body was eventually located and recovered by divers on the opposite bank of the river. Initial assessments indicated that there were no strong currents in the area. Search teams included divers from Venice and Trieste, an helicopter named Drago based in Venice, and a maritime team from Portogruaro equipped with a boat featuring sonar technology.
