Shock in Medjugorje: on the statue of the Madonna the inscription "devil in skirt", the altar is set on fire

In the early hours of Tuesday, July 28, several acts of vandalism occurred at the Marian shrine of Medjugorje in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The statues and external altar of the Church of Saint James were defaced with graffiti such as 'Devil in a dress' and 'Medjugorje is a fraud.' Local police received reports around 4:30 AM about the defacement of the Madonna statue on Podbrdo Hill, which was marked with black paint and insulting phrases. Shortly after, an arson incident was reported at the external altar behind the parish church. Media images showed signs of vandalism, including banners stating 'The Madonna is the Devil' and 'Only Jesus,' as well as Polish-language placards listing the names of six alleged visionaries accused of being frauds. Signs of similar vandalism were reportedly found at other pilgrimage sites like Križevac and the Blue Cross, though these have not been officially confirmed yet. Surveillance footage captured a man approaching the altar, pouring flammable liquid, and setting fire to it before leaving. Police have isolated the area and are investigating to determine the extent of damage and identify the perpetrator.

Bias read (Center): The article presents a factual account of vandalism at a religious site without overtly favoring any side. It includes quotes from authorities and mentions both the incidents and the responses by local police, providing balanced information without apparent ideological framing.
