Gary Glitter, the former pop star known for hits such as "Do You Wanna Touch Me," has appeared in court charged with historical sex offences dating back to the 1970s. The 82-year-old, whose real name is Paul Gadd, made an appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday via video link. He faces charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. According to prosecutors, these alleged crimes occurred between 1978 and 1981, involving a complainant who is currently in her mid-50s and cannot be identified due to legal protections. During the court session, Glitter, who is reportedly severely hearing-impaired, struggled to communicate effectively. When asked to confirm his identity, he stated, "Your honour, excuse me, I’m extremely deaf and unless I’m lip-reading I can’t hear." He later requested that the volume be reduced to minimize distortion in his hearing aids. Despite these challenges, he confirmed his name as Paul Gadd. The court session concluded with Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring remanding Glitter into custody pending his next appearance at the Old Bailey on 2 September. It remains unclear whether this hearing will take place in person or via video link. The prosecution, led by Jonathan Polnay KC, detailed the nature of the alleged offences. Prosecutors claimed that Glitter lured the complainant to his home in Kensington and Chelsea, west London, by offering her chocolate. Over a period spanning several years, he allegedly committed multiple serious sexual offences against the child, who was between the ages of eight and 11 at the time. The complainant came forward to the Metropolitan Police in January 2025, leading to an investigation that culminated in Glitter’s arrest in July 2025. Glitter, who has been incarcerated since 2015 for sexually abusing three schoolgirls between 1975 and 1980, was initially released from HMP The Verne in February 2023 after completing half of his 16-year sentence. However, he was recalled shortly thereafter following a breach of his licence conditions. His earlier conviction emerged from Operation Yewtree, a Metropolitan Police initiative launched in response to the Jimmy Savile scandal. Glitter was the first individual to be arrested as part of this operation in October 2012. The current case marks a continuation of legal action against Glitter, highlighting ongoing efforts to address past misconduct. Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Bethan David noted that prosecutors have worked to ensure there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the case and that it serves the public interest. The case also underscores broader concerns regarding historical abuse cases and the challenges faced by victims in coming forward decades after the alleged crimes. Legal experts suggest that the upcoming trial at the Old Bailey will be a critical juncture in determining the outcome of the charges.
