South Korea has unveiled a detailed power supply roadmap aimed at supporting the expansion of semiconductor manufacturing hubs operated by Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. The plan, formalized through agreements among the government, local authorities, and energy providers, outlines specific timelines and capacities for delivering electricity to two major semiconductor complexes under development. The Honam semiconductor complex, located in the southwestern region of South Korea, is set to receive approximately 3 gigawatts (GW) of power initially to enable fabrication operations starting in 2029. This initial phase will be followed by an expansion to more than 6 GW as the facility grows. Meanwhile, the two semiconductor complexes in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, are projected to require over 14 GW of electricity by 2041. To meet this demand, the government plans to utilize existing transmission lines and three 1-GW liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plants to supply initial power before completing longer-distance transmission infrastructure. This phased approach aims to address challenges associated with constructing new transmission lines, ensuring that electricity is available as soon as possible for the national semiconductor complex, which is slated to host six fabrication units. The agreements were signed by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO). Climate Minister Kim Sung-hwan highlighted the significance of these partnerships, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to guarantee the timely availability of electricity for the construction of new industrial complexes. KEPCO President and CEO Kim Dong-cheol participated in the signing ceremony, underscoring the company's commitment to supporting the nation's semiconductor ambitions. In addition to the power supply initiatives, Samsung and SK hynix are adapting their business strategies to align with the evolving demands of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Both companies are entering into long-term supply agreements with major customers, shifting away from traditional quarterly negotiations to more extended contracts that span several years. These agreements aim to secure stable supply chains for high-demand memory chips used in AI data centers, reducing the volatility typically associated with the memory chip market. Samsung, in particular, has made strides in integrating AI technologies into its semiconductor operations. Recently, the company recruited Han Bo-hyung, a prominent figure in deep learning and vision AI, and Hahn Tai-rin, a data engineering specialist from Meta, to enhance its AI capabilities. Han will lead the development of AI models tailored for semiconductor research and development, focusing on areas such as wafer image analysis and defect detection. Hahn will oversee the structuring of data to make it suitable for AI training and analysis, aiming to improve efficiency across the semiconductor value chain. Samsung's broader AI strategy includes leveraging agentic AI to integrate chip design, engineering, and manufacturing processes. The company has also explored the use of digital twins and autonomous AI systems to optimize production and maintain quality standards. These efforts reflect a comprehensive approach to incorporating AI into every stage of semiconductor development, from initial design to final manufacturing.
