Senior IPS officer Amit Garg named NCRB chief, Alok Kumar Mittal to head BPRD

On Monday, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) announced the appointments of three senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers to lead key institutions within India's policing and criminal justice system. These appointments include Amit Garg as the new director of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Alok Kumar Mittal as the director general of the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD), and Sujeet Pandey as the new director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). Each of these roles carries significant responsibility, reflecting the importance of these organizations in shaping national security and law enforcement strategies. Amit Garg, who belongs to the 1993 batch of the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the director of the NCRB. Currently, he serves as the director of the SVPNPA in Hyderabad, where he oversees training programs for newly selected IPS officers and other law enforcement personnel. His tenure at NCRB will last until October 31, 2027, coinciding with his scheduled retirement date unless extended by further orders. Notably, Garg's position at NCRB has been temporarily elevated to the Director General (DG) level on a personal basis, highlighting the significance of his role in this critical institution. Alok Kumar Mittal, another 1993 batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, has been appointed as the director general of the BPRD. This organization operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs and focuses on research, training, and policy formulation related to police operations nationwide. Mittal's appointment comes after he was serving with the Haryana government. His term will extend until June 30, 2029, aligning with his retirement date. As director general, Mittal will oversee initiatives aimed at modernizing police practices and enhancing inter-agency coordination. Meanwhile, Sujeet Pandey, a 1994 batch officer from the Uttar Pradesh cadre, will take over as the director of the SVPNPA. He will assume this role following Garg's transition to NCRB. Pandey's tenure is set to continue until July 31, 2028, when he is expected to retire. The SVPNPA plays a crucial role in training and professional development for IPS officers, ensuring they meet the high standards required for leadership positions in law enforcement.
