On Friday, the Vidyavardhaka First Grade College in Mysuru hosted a one-day international seminar on “Computer Vision for Text Detection and Forensic Handwriting Analysis.” Organised by the Department of Studies in Computer Applications at the PG Centre of the college, the event took place in the college’s auditorium and attracted around 200 participants, including educators, researchers, students, and industry professionals. The seminar was conducted in collaboration with the Vidyavardhaka Research Foundation and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). The topics covered included “A Journey of Text Detection and Recognition in Natural Scene Images,” “Handwriting Analysis for Forensic Applications,” and “How to Write a Tier-1 Scientific Article.” The event was inaugurated by Basavanna M., Professor and Chairman of the Department of Studies in MCA at Davangere University, Shivagangotri. He delivered the opening remarks, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary research and its role in advancing technological innovation. Shivakumara Palaiahnakote, a professor of computer science at the School of Science and Engineering Environment, University of Salford, Manchester, UK, served as the resource person for the seminar. His expertise in computer vision and forensic technologies added considerable value to the discussions. During the proceedings, P. Vishwanath, Secretary of the VV Sangha, presided over the event, while Shreeshaila Ramanavar, Treasurer, and Tejas Baba K.C., Chairman of the College Management Committee, acted as guests of honour. Their presence underscored the institutional support and significance of the seminar within the academic community. The three technical sessions offered a comprehensive overview of current advancements and challenges in the field. The first session explored the complexities of text detection and recognition in natural scene images, addressing issues such as image noise, varying lighting conditions, and language diversity. The second session focused on forensic handwriting analysis, discussing techniques used to authenticate documents and identify potential fraud. The final session aimed to guide participants in crafting high-quality scientific articles, emphasizing clarity, structure, and adherence to academic standards.
