Authorities have intensified their investigation into the murder of journalist Francisco Alejandro Leyva in Oaxaca, with officials vowing that the crime will not go unpunished. The victim was shot by armed individuals while working at a food stall in the La Esmeralda subdivision, located in the municipality of San Pablo Etla. Federal authorities confirmed through social media that they are committed to ensuring justice, emphasizing coordinated efforts with local law enforcement to strengthen the case and identify those responsible. The incident occurred after the journalist was attacked with gunfire at his food stand, following which forensic experts arrived to begin the investigative process. According to reports, Leyva was currently writing for his column “El Zumbido del Moscardón” and had previously served as director of Cortv. His death marks the 179th journalist killed in Mexico since 2000, according to Article 19, an organization dedicated to defending freedom of expression. Oaxaca has emerged as one of the deadliest states for journalists, with 16 victims recorded so far. Governor Salomón Jara condemned the killing, expressing condolences to Leyva’s family and the broader journalism community. He described the journalist as a “critical” figure within his administration, acknowledging that criticism is part of the profession but rejecting the justification of violence against the press. In a statement posted on his X account, he emphasized that no difference, whether political or personal, can ever justify acts of violence against journalists. “We respect criticism and free speech,” he wrote, “and we will continue to uphold these values.” Jara also called for collaboration between the state attorney’s office and the National Prosecutor’s Office (FGR) to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation. He stressed that speculation or premature conclusions would not be tolerated, insisting instead on a professional approach aimed at identifying the perpetrators and delivering them to justice. “Our position is clear: the truth must be known, and there will be no impunity,” he concluded. The murder has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of journalists in Oaxaca, a region long associated with high levels of violence against the press. The case adds to a troubling trend, highlighting the risks faced by those who report on sensitive issues. Article 19 noted that the state continues to rank among the most dangerous for journalists, underscoring the need for stronger protections and accountability mechanisms.
