Ferrari boss reassures fans: 'Everything can change in one weekend'

Ferrari's team principal, Fred Vasseur, has sought to temper expectations among fans following the Italian team's strong performance in the Formula 1 season so far. Despite initial skepticism about their chances, Ferrari has emerged as a formidable contender, currently sitting second in the championship standings behind Mercedes, which features the outstanding Kimi Antonelli. However, Vasseur remains cautious, emphasizing that one weekend does not define the entire season. The shift in dynamics within Formula 1 has been notable, particularly after Lewis Hamilton secured victory at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, followed by Charles Leclerc’s triumph at Silverstone. These results have sparked discussions about Ferrari's potential challenge for the title. Yet, Vasseur insists that drawing conclusions based on just a couple of races would be premature. He highlights how the balance of power can fluctuate significantly from one weekend to another, citing recent examples where both Hamilton and Leclerc experienced contrasting performances. Hamilton, who had dominated in Spain, faced difficulties during the Austrian Grand Prix, finishing fifth. In contrast, Leclerc started strongly but ended up eighth, illustrating the unpredictable nature of racing. Vasseur pointed out these inconsistencies, noting that they are a common occurrence in the sport. He recalled receiving comments immediately after Barcelona suggesting Ferrari was back in the title race, only to hear the opposite a week later when he emphasized the importance of maintaining focus despite varying outcomes. Vasseur stressed the need for the team to remain focused and not let a single good or bad weekend alter their approach. He reiterated his commitment to continuous improvement, stating that neither a strong nor weak result should influence the team's mindset. This philosophy applies equally to all members of the factory, ensuring consistency in their efforts toward achieving better performance. Despite Hamilton reducing the gap to Antonelli by just 32 points, Vasseur believes Mercedes still holds a slight edge in terms of clean performance. He noted that over several sessions during the previous weekend, Mercedes likely outperformed Ferrari in five out of seven instances. According to Vasseur, Ferrari's opportunities often come during the actual race, where factors such as strategy, starting position, and tire management play crucial roles. He acknowledged that while normal races might offer some advantages due to strategic elements, sprint races demand pure speed without the benefit of strategy. This distinction underscores the challenges Ferrari faces in different formats of competition. Regardless of improved results, Vasseur insists that the team must stay grounded in its expectations. He admitted that Mercedes has a slight advantage in clean performance this year and will present a tough challenge. Nevertheless, he urged the team to concentrate on upcoming races, specifically highlighting the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa as the next major test. The weather conditions there will be entirely different, requiring the team to reset and approach each weekend as a new opportunity. Finally, Vasseur dismissed the notion that Ferrari could make a significant leap ahead of its rivals overnight. He argued that there is nothing magical about making progress of five or six tenths in a single weekend. Instead, success comes from accumulating small improvements consistently throughout the season. His message to the team is clear: steady, incremental progress is the path forward rather than seeking dramatic changes in a short span.
