Is the migration slowing down?

Authorities in Slovenia have recorded a continued influx of undocumented migrants during the weekend, with police in several regions seizing over 146 individuals. The majority were intercepted near the border areas of Brežič, Sevnica, Črnomlje, Krško, and Metlika, according to local reports. These actions followed a series of operations targeting illegal crossings, which have become increasingly frequent in recent weeks. On July 17th, after 7 pm, officers at the police station in Nova Mesto na Obrežju stopped a personal car registered under German license plates. During the inspection, they discovered that a 42-year-old Ukrainian citizen was transporting four Chinese nationals who did not meet the conditions for entry into Slovenia. The Ukrainian driver was detained and placed under arrest, while his vehicle was seized. He was charged with violating border regulations and brought before a judicial officer. The Chinese nationals expressed their intention to submit applications for international protection. The operation marked part of a broader effort to monitor and intercept unauthorized border crossings. From July 17th through July 20th, police in the Brežič area, covering locations such as Obrežje, Dobova, Rigonce, Loče, Slovenska vas, Rakovec, Brežice, Sela pri Dobovi, Ribnica, and Vrhje, identified and detained 49 citizens from Bangladesh, 17 from Egypt, nine from Palestine, nine from China, six from Sudan, four from Russia, four from Morocco, three from Turkey, and three from Algeria. In the Črnomelj region, spanning Damelj, Vinica, and Zilje, authorities apprehended 13 Afghan citizens, eight Sudanese, eight Pakistani, one Bangladeshi, and one Nepalese. In Drašiči, near Metlika, eight Egyptian nationals were detained. At the Krško police station, two Pakistani citizens were arrested, and in Sevnica, one Afghan national was taken into custody. All ongoing legal proceedings against these foreign nationals involve violations of border laws, including unauthorized entry into Slovenian territory. Some of the detainees have indicated their intent to apply for international protection, suggesting a pattern of asylum seekers attempting to cross the border despite legal restrictions. The situation reflects a growing challenge for Slovenian law enforcement, as the number of undocumented arrivals continues to rise. Police officials have noted that the methods used by migrants to bypass border controls remain varied, ranging from vehicles driven by third-country nationals to direct attempts to cross on foot. This has led to increased patrols and more frequent checkpoints along key routes. Local authorities emphasize that all arrests are conducted in accordance with established procedures, ensuring that individuals are treated fairly and that due process is maintained. However, the volume of cases has raised concerns about resource allocation and the need for additional support in processing immigration-related matters. As the summer progresses, it is expected that similar operations will continue, particularly given the seasonal nature of migration flows.
