Chapel catches fire in Vanavil, Chiapas; accident may have occurred due to carelessness with the candlesticks placed around the altar

A chapel known as Jalame’tik Tzajan Zuyul in the community of Vanavil, located in the municipality of Tenejapa, was deliberately set on fire, apparently due to a carelessness with the candles placed around the altar. Indigenous Tzeltal people reported that the incident occurred after the mayor of Tenejapa, Roberto Girón Luna, who belongs to the Morena party, participated in a prayer service at the chapel. Upon his departure, the fire broke out, which upset the Catholic faithful. The indigenous community accused Girón Luna of causing the fire but did not provide evidence regarding the origin of the blaze or the extent of the damage. They have not yet decided whether to seek assistance from the bishop of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Rodrigo Aguilar Martínez, to repair the chapel.
