Niovi Vavoula, a cybersecurity professor at the University of Luxembourg, suggested the problem stemmed from poor implementation of the EES by member states. She noted that the sister’s exit from Amsterdam might have been improperly recorded, possibly due to the system still being in its early stages of deployment. The woman’s trip concluded on April 12, while the EES system began operations on April 10. Vavoula also criticized the Romanian border authorities for their approach. According to EES guidelines, passengers should not be identified solely by facial recognition but must undergo verification using fingerprints and passport numbers. She pointed out that the authorities appeared overly reliant on facial recognition, neglecting other critical identification methods.
