Slovenian rebounders in the semifinals of the Europa League

The Slovenian women's volleyball team has made history by securing the top spot in the regular season of the European League without losing a single set. This remarkable achievement was sealed on their final match against North Macedonia, which they won decisively with a score of 3:0 (15, 10, 10). The victory ensured that Slovenia finished the regular phase with six consecutive wins, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s volleyball history.

The Slovenian team faced North Macedonia in Skopje during the third round of the European League. Despite being the underdogs and having already secured their place in the semifinals, head coach Alessandro Orefice chose not to take any risks. He deployed his main players, who had carried the bulk of the workload throughout the tournament, but also gave opportunities to some reserve players. The difference in quality between the two teams was evident, as North Macedonia managed to lead briefly in the opening set, reaching a score of 12:11 before Slovenia took control of the game. From there, the Slovenian side dominated both offensively and defensively, showcasing their superior skills and tactical discipline.

Lorena Lorber Fijok emerged as the standout performer of the match, scoring 16 points, while Fatoumatta Sillah contributed 12 points. Their combined efforts were crucial in securing the comprehensive victory. The Slovenian team’s ability to maintain high performance levels throughout the entire match highlighted their preparation and focus.

In her post-match interview, captain Saša Planinšec emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on the opposing team's serve and effectively blocking their attacks. She noted that the team's primary goal was to finish the regular season without a loss, a feat they accomplished successfully. Planinšec expressed pride in this achievement and acknowledged the need for further improvements as they prepare for the upcoming challenges. She mentioned that the team will face Slovakia in the semifinal, a formidable opponent known for its strong lineup, particularly in the role of the setter.

The Slovenian team will now compete in the semifinals against Slovakia, following the results of other matches in the regular season. Sweden, Hungary, and Slovakia all completed the regular season without losses, although Sweden and Hungary each lost one set, while Slovakia lost two sets. As a result, Slovakia secured fourth place and will face Slovenia in the semifinals. Both the semifinal and the potential final will be played over two matches, one at home and one away, providing the Slovenian team with valuable experience and opportunities to showcase their abilities in front of their fans.

Head coach Alessandro Orefice reflected on the significance of the team's achievements, noting that the victory against North Macedonia allowed them to maintain their position at the top of the standings.
