Scuba divers believed they rarely touched coral reefs, but observers found widespread damage. A new study conducted by marine scientists and dive professionals has revealed that over 40 per cent of physical contacts made by recreational scuba divers during dives caused visible damage to living coral structures. The research, published in The Conversation, followed 732 divers across Indonesia and the Philippines, spending hundreds of hours observing their interactions with marine environments. The findings highlight a critical gap between public perception and actual behavior, underscoring the urgent need for better education and regulation in marine tourism. The study tracked divers' movements and documented instances of contact with the reef, revealing that each diver made physical contact with the reef approximately once every four minutes. When asked about their behavior after completing dives, participants significantly underestimated the frequency of their interactions. Many remained entirely unaware of the damage they had inadvertently caused. These results suggest a profound misalignment between self-assessment and real-world performance, raising concerns about the long-term health of coral ecosystems under increasing human pressure. The research team identified several factors contributing to the high rate of reef contact. One key issue was the psychological phenomenon known as the Dunning-Kruger effect, where individuals with less skill tend to overestimate their abilities. Among the surveyed divers, 69 per cent rated themselves “above average” at avoiding intentional contact with the reef, while 86 per cent considered themselves skilled at preventing accidental bumps. Yet, despite these high ratings, over 40 per cent of all recorded contacts resulted in measurable damage. This discrepancy suggests that confidence can sometimes mask poor technique, leading to unintentional harm. Social influences also played a significant role in shaping diver behavior. Researchers observed instances of “social contagion,” where one diver’s actions, such as touching or resting on the reef, prompted others to follow suit. This created a ripple effect, reinforcing behaviors that could otherwise be avoided. Additionally, excitement over encountering large marine animals, such as sharks, turtles, and manta rays, heightened the risk of contact. Divers often drifted too close to the seafloor in pursuit of a better view or photograph, increasing the likelihood of collisions with coral structures. Equipment choices further exacerbated the problem. Divers using underwater cameras, metal muck sticks, or gloves were more frequently observed making contact with the reef compared to those without such accessories. These tools, while useful for photography or stability, can increase the chance of accidental collisions. Some dive sites have implemented rules prohibiting certain equipment, but such restrictions are often met with resistance from the recreational diving community, which values freedom and flexibility in their activities. The study underscores the broader implications of unregulated marine tourism. As coral reefs continue to face threats from climate change, coastal development, and human activity, the cumulative impact of even minor disturbances can be devastating. The research serves as a call to action for both divers and conservationists to promote safer practices and greater awareness. By addressing the root causes of reef damage, whether through improved training, stricter regulations, or enhanced communication, the hope is to reduce the ongoing stress on these vital ecosystems.
