Difficulties at the summit: forest fires in the Chiemgau Alps

Firefighters are battling a wildfire near the summit area of the Hochwand in the Chiemgauer Alps, close to the Lackenbergwand near Unterwössen. The blaze has prompted a large-scale operation due to the difficult access conditions in the high-altitude region. As of early Thursday morning, the situation remains challenging, with smoke spreading significantly and prompting warnings to nearby residents. The fire was first reported late Wednesday evening, with visible smoke plumes observed at around 1,000 meters above sea level. Firefighters have been working tirelessly to contain the flames, utilizing aerial resources including three water helicopters that were active both on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. Due to the remote location and rugged terrain, ground-based firefighting teams initially faced obstacles in reaching the source of the fire. A total of approximately 200 personnel from local fire departments, mountain rescue services, emergency medical teams, and police are currently deployed to manage the incident. Residents in the surrounding areas have been advised to keep windows and doors closed, turn off ventilation systems and air conditioning units, and avoid the vicinity of the fire zone. This precautionary measure aims to minimize exposure to harmful smoke and reduce health risks. The federal road B305 has been temporarily closed in both directions, towards Reit im Winkl and Marquartstein, to ensure public safety and facilitate emergency vehicle movement. At this stage, the exact size of the affected area and the cause of the fire remain under investigation. However, initial assessments suggest that no injuries have occurred as a result of the blaze. Officials noted that the conditions during the fire's outbreak resemble those encountered during a similar incident at the Saurüsselkopf near Ruhpolding in May. That fire spread rapidly and proved extremely difficult to control, requiring over a month of continuous efforts before operations could be declared complete. To prevent further spread, firefighters have implemented a strategy involving long hose lines and strategically placed sprinklers, akin to a large garden sprinkler system. These measures aim to moisten the surrounding vegetation and create a barrier against the advancing flames. A shuttle service using tanker vehicles has been established to supply water and equipment continuously to the site. This coordinated effort underscores the complexity of managing such fires in mountainous regions where traditional firefighting methods are limited. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with ongoing updates expected as more information becomes available. The community remains vigilant, adhering to safety guidelines while hoping for favorable weather conditions that might aid in containing the fire.
