Severe storms in northern Italy

A severe thunderstorm hit the winter sports resort of Breuil-Cervinia in Italy's Aosta Valley yesterday evening, causing two mountain streams to overflow their banks within 20 minutes and resulting in significant damage. The floodwaters submerged parts of the local 18-hole golf course, covered areas with debris from a mudslide, and destroyed two bridges. Social media videos showed water rushing down slopes into lower areas, prompting the evacuation of the camping area for safety reasons. The parking lot of the Grand Hotel Cervino in the district of Avouil was also flooded. Alpine rescue teams and firefighters were deployed to the scene. Heavy hailfall up to 15 centimeters occurred above the Capanna Carrel hut at 3,850 meters altitude. This storm follows a period of unusually high temperatures, with Italian skier Federica Brignone recently sharing images of nearly snow-free Matterhorn. Due to persistent heat and lack of freezing nights, the Swiss cable car company Zermatt ended its summer ski season on the Matterhorn a month earlier than planned. Italy is currently experiencing another heatwave expected to last until the end of the week, creating critical conditions for glaciers in
