RIVM estimate: hundreds more deaths than expected during heat last week

According to an initial estimate by the RIVM, approximately 480 more deaths occurred in the Netherlands during last week's heatwave than expected. Around 3,530 deaths were recorded, compared to the anticipated 3,050. The majority of these additional deaths involved individuals aged 80 and older, with the highest numbers reported in the eastern and southern regions where temperatures were most extreme. The RIVM notes that the data is not yet complete, as some deaths may be registered weeks after they occur. The report highlights that elderly individuals and those with chronic illnesses are particularly vulnerable to extreme heat due to reduced organ function, decreased fluid intake, and impaired sweating mechanisms.
