Priest sent disgusting messages to children in his parish Judgment

A pastor has been sentenced to conditional imprisonment for sexual offenses against children. The Satakunta District Court convicted the man for three instances of sexually abusing children and three violations of his duties. The crimes occurred between April and September 2023, involving three victims who were members of his congregation. The pastor was involved in youth work at the church during the incidents. He contacted the victims through the social media app Snapchat, sending them repeatedly sexually suggestive messages. He commented on their appearance, body shape, and breasts both verbally and through emojis, and sent photos of himself topless. The court deemed the behavior as described by the prosecutor, finding the communication to be sexual and harmful to the children's development. The 50-year-old man, born in the 1980s, received a sentence of one year and two years of probation over a two-year period. He must compensate each victim between €2,000 and €3,000 for the distress caused, and pay approximately €12,500 in legal costs. The verdict is not yet final. The pastor has been suspended from his church duties and priestly position until the legal proceedings conclude.

A former pastor has been sentenced to conditional imprisonment for sexual offenses against minors within his congregation. The man, who was around 40 years old at the time of the crimes, was found guilty by the Satakunta District Court of three counts of sexual abuse of children and three charges of breach of duty. These offenses occurred between April and September 2023. The victims were three individuals affiliated with the pastor’s church. During this period, the accused was actively involved in youth work within the congregation.

The pastor used the messaging app Snapchat to establish contact with the minors, sending them frequent messages with explicit content. He commented on their physical appearance, including their bodies and chests, using both words and emojis. In addition to these messages, the pastor sent images of himself with his upper body exposed. According to the court, the communication was sexually charged and had the potential to harm the development of the minors.

The court found sufficient evidence to support the prosecution's claims, noting that the nature of the interactions was explicitly sexual and detrimental to the minors' well-being. The convicted man received a conditional prison sentence of one year and two months, with a probation period of two years. As part of the judgment, he must compensate each victim with between €2,000 and €3,000 for damages caused by the offense, as well as pay approximately €12,500 in legal costs. However, the sentence is not yet enforceable.

The pastor was placed under arrest for his ecclesiastical duties until the judicial process concluded. The decision regarding his removal from office was made during a meeting of the Diocesan Court of the Archdiocese of Turku earlier this spring.

In another case, a 17-year-old boy was sentenced to conditional imprisonment for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl during the Kotka Sea Days festival in July 2024. The incident took place in a park where the girl was heavily intoxicated after consuming cannabis and several drinks. The boy allegedly forced her into a sexual act while she was unconscious. The girl later recounted the experience to her friend, who then informed her parents. The parents took the girl to a hospital for a medical examination, which confirmed the assault had taken place.

The court heard testimony from the girl’s friend and father, supporting the girl’s account. Despite the boy denying the allegations, the court determined there was enough evidence to convict him. The girl was found to have consumed alcohol, indicating she was too impaired to give valid consent. The court ruled that the boy committed the crime due to his immaturity and lack of consideration.

As a result, the 17-year-old was sentenced to one year and two months of conditional imprisonment. Additionally, he must pay €3,000 in compensation to the victim. Due to his age and the victim's lack of prior sexual experience, the court decided against incarceration, opting instead for a conditional sentence.

These cases highlight the serious consequences of sexual misconduct involving minors, whether committed by religious figures or other individuals. Both perpetrators faced conditional sentences, emphasizing the importance of accountability and justice in such matters. The outcomes also reflect the courts' recognition of the vulnerability of minors and the need for appropriate measures to protect them from exploitation and harm.
