"There will be more". The head of the Ministry of Defence announces a key aircraft

Poland has announced its intention to acquire Airbus A400M transport aircraft as part of its broader defense modernization efforts under the European Union's Security and Defense Partnership (SDP) initiative known as SAFE. This move comes amid growing concerns over Poland’s need to bolster its military capabilities, particularly in aerial logistics and air-to-air refueling, which are critical for the operational effectiveness of its newly acquired F-35 fighter jets. The acquisition of the A400M is being considered alongside other strategic procurements aimed at strengthening Poland’s national security posture within the framework of NATO and EU cooperation.

The A400M, a multi-role transport aircraft developed by Airbus Defence and Space, is currently undergoing significant upgrades to enhance its capabilities beyond traditional cargo transport. These enhancements include the integration of advanced surveillance, reconnaissance, and intelligence-gathering systems (ISR), allowing the aircraft to serve as a mobile command center for both manned and unmanned aerial assets. According to Airbus officials, these modifications will enable the A400M to support tactical command and control operations in the air, making it a versatile asset for modern warfare scenarios.

In addition to ISR capabilities, the upgraded A400M will be equipped with modular payloads designed for precision weaponry deployment and enhanced load capacity. The aircraft can carry up to 37 tons of cargo, significantly surpassing the capabilities of existing Polish transport planes such as the American C-130H and the Spanish C-295M CASA. This increased payload capacity would allow Poland to more effectively deploy armored vehicles, heavy equipment, and supplies during military operations or humanitarian missions.

The development of these new capabilities for the A400M is being carried out in collaboration with France, where initial installations on the first French A400M are scheduled for completion in 2027, followed by flight testing in 2028. Airbus is also exploring further improvements, including long-range jamming capabilities, increased load capacity up to 40 tons, and firefighting abilities. These enhancements aim to make the A400M a truly multi-mission aircraft capable of supporting a wide range of military operations.

Poland’s interest in acquiring the A400M aligns with its participation in the SAFE program, which seeks to strengthen European defense cooperation through joint procurement initiatives. Under this program, Poland plans to purchase several A400M aircraft, complementing its current fleet of transport planes. The acquisition of these aircraft would significantly improve Poland’s ability to conduct airborne refueling operations, which are essential for extending the operational range of its fighter jets, particularly the F-35.

Vice Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized the importance of air-to-air refueling capabilities for Poland’s national security, noting that without these capabilities, the full potential of the F-35 could not be realized. He highlighted the necessity of securing commitments from Spain, which is also participating in the SAFE program, to ensure timely delivery of the necessary aircraft and related infrastructure. Kosiniak-Kamysz stressed the urgency of these acquisitions, given the complex nature of the production process and the need to meet deadlines set by the SDP initiative.

The discussions between Polish and Spanish officials have focused on ensuring that the procurement process adheres to the principles of mutual investment and industrial cooperation. As part of this agreement, Spanish companies are expected to invest in Poland’s defense industry, contributing to local manufacturing capabilities. For instance, wiring components for the air-to-air refueling aircraft (MRTT) are already being produced in Poland, marking the beginning of a broader industrial partnership.

As the negotiations progress, Poland remains committed to enhancing its military readiness through strategic partnerships and joint procurement efforts. The acquisition of the A400M represents a significant step towards achieving this goal, offering Poland a versatile and powerful tool to support its national defense strategy and contribute to collective security within Europe.
