Sambhal violence: Interpol issues Red Corner Notice against mastermind Shariq Satha

Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against Shariq Sata, a fugitive gangster accused of being the mastermind behind the violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, in November 2024. According to a senior police official, the notice marks a critical step in bringing Sata to justice for the 2024 incident and numerous other criminal charges against him. The notice was issued following a coordinated effort by the Uttar Pradesh Police, with support from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to secure international cooperation through Interpol. The violence in Sambhal erupted on November 24, 2024, when local residents clashed with security forces during a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The survey was conducted amid claims that a Harihar temple once stood at the site. The confrontation led to four deaths and numerous injuries. Investigations later identified Shariq Sata as the primary orchestrator of the violence. He had been declared a fugitive by a court and was subject to property attachment proceedings. Despite multiple police raids, Sata managed to evade capture, prompting authorities to take further measures. Sata had fled to Dubai using a forged passport, and his family members have regularly traveled to the UAE. Police maintained constant surveillance over him and compiled a comprehensive dossier for the CBI, which facilitated coordination with Interpol. The Red Corner Notice, an international tool used to request the location and provisional arrest of individuals wanted for prosecution or sentencing, was issued as part of these efforts. This notice aims to ensure Sata’s eventual arrest and extradition, enabling him to face legal consequences for both the 2024 incident and the approximately 55 to 60 prior criminal cases against him. Police reports indicate that Sata was deeply involved in organized crime, particularly vehicle thefts, across the National Capital Region (NCR) and Uttar Pradesh. The police official, currently serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Bijnor, stated that the notice represents a culmination of years of investigative work and legal procedures. A lookout circular had already been issued against Sata, underscoring the seriousness of his alleged crimes.
