Saxony-Anhalt: Will the Greens of the AfD make it through the march?

In the run-up to the September 6 regional election in Saxony-Anhalt, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) continues to lead with 41 percent according to a new Infratest dimap poll conducted between July 23 and 28. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which had previously held 26 percent, has dropped to 24 percent. The survey was commissioned by the regional broadcaster MDR and local newspapers Mitteldeutsche Zeitung and Volksstimme, involving 1,149 eligible voters. The AfD’s chances of securing an outright majority in the state parliament remain unchanged despite the CDU's decline. With the left-wing party (Die Linke) gaining one percentage point to 13 percent and the Social Democrats (SPD) remaining stable at seven percent, the Greens have also returned to the state legislature. According to the poll, the Greens have increased their support by one percentage point to five percent. As more parties gain representation in the state assembly, the likelihood of the AfD achieving sole rule diminishes. The Free Voters (BSW), known for their sharp criticism of established parties and increasing openness toward the AfD, continue to trail behind at four percent. The previously represented Free Democratic Party (FDP) is now listed under “Others” due to low and hard-to-measure approval ratings. The survey period coincided with internal turmoil within the federal CDU and the lingering impact of the attack on the Christopher Street Day in Berlin on July 25. This context likely influenced voter sentiment ahead of the election. Significant shifts have occurred among personal popularity ratings of the leading candidates. For the first time, the AfD’s top candidate, Ulrich Siegmund, has surpassed the CDU’s incumbent leader, Sven Schulze. Siegmund currently holds 35 percent approval, while Schulze scores 29 percent. In early 2025, both were tied at 20 percent following Schulze’s nomination as the CDU’s top candidate. In January 2026, former long-serving minister-president Reiner Haseloff stepped down in favor of Schulze, hoping to improve his standing. However, this strategy did not yield the desired results. Schulze maintains a slight edge in recognition, with 65 percent compared to Siegmund’s 63 percent. Overall, Schulze falls significantly short of the visibility and satisfaction levels once achieved by Haseloff. When analyzing the satisfaction ratings by age group and gender, Siegmund leads particularly among younger voters, men, and less-educated groups. Schulze, however, shows stronger support among older individuals, remarkably, even among less-educated voters, a notable finding for a CDU candidate. Public satisfaction with the work of the current coalition government, composed of the CDU, SPD, and FDP, has declined over recent months. It fell from 33 percent in May to 29 percent currently. Among CDU supporters, 82 percent reject cooperation with the AfD, while only 16 percent support such a partnership. The AfD’s base is divided, with 55 percent in favor of a coalition with the CDU and 39 percent against. Within the CDU electorate, there is also division regarding potential cooperation with the Left Party. While 52 percent oppose a coalition with the Left, 41 percent support it. Conversely, the Left Party’s supporters are largely in agreement, with 91 percent favoring a coalition with the CDU. The political landscape in Saxony-Anhalt continues to shift, with the AfD maintaining its position as the strongest force, while the CDU faces further erosion of its support. The Greens and SPD have regained some ground, and the outcome of the upcoming election will determine the future direction of governance in the region.
