Russia seeks answers from U.S. about alleged support for Ukrainian attacks, Lavrov says

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, accused the United States of providing intelligence support to Ukrainian forces conducting attacks inside Russian territory, according to remarks aired on state television on Friday. Lavrov stated that Moscow had submitted a list of questions to the U.S. State Department, seeking clarification on the role of American intelligence in these operations. The allegations come amid ongoing tensions between Russia and the West, with no peace talks on Ukraine having occurred since February, when the U.S. shifted focus to its conflict with Iran. Lavrov cited a conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump during a summit last year, in which Putin reportedly expressed openness to considering Trump’s peace proposals. According to Lavrov, Putin said he had reviewed the proposals and was willing to accept them “in the form they were sent.” However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed the idea that any agreement was reached, asserting that if it had, the war would have ended. Moscow has also warned that it will increase its efforts to disrupt Western military aid flowing into Ukraine. Lavrov emphasized that Russia is already taking steps to neutralize such support, describing the measures as becoming “much tougher.” This includes targeting Western-supplied equipment and infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces. Despite these challenges, Ukraine continues to receive military assistance from its Western allies, though it faces shortages in critical defense systems, particularly interceptor missiles needed to counter Russian air attacks. The war, entering its fifth year, has seen persistent Western support for Kyiv, even as Russia escalates its military campaign.
