Romania reports attack on gas tankers in the Black Sea

A gas tanker was attacked in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania, resulting in three crew members being seriously injured. The attack occurred approximately 20 nautical miles from the Romanian coast, outside of Romanian territorial waters. According to Romanian President Nicusor Dan, the incident is likely linked to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. The vessel, flying the Liberian flag, was en route from Egypt’s Alexandria to Ukraine’s port of Reni when the attack took place. All 17 crew members were evacuated to safety, but three suffered severe burns and required medical attention. This follows recent attacks in the Black Sea region, including a Russian missile strike on a Turkish freighter near Odessa over the weekend that killed at least six people, including four Indian crew members. India has since summoned the Russian ambassador in response.
