Landhelgisgæslan hefur frestað 100 ára afmælið sitt í Vestmannaeyjum á miðvikudaginn vegna umstangsins í kringum skipið Bandero, sem er í siglingu með Pauls Watson-samtökin. Hættir í hátíðarhöldum hafa verið ákvarðað í ljós á grundvelli umgæslu um hvalveiðar og mikilvægan áherslu á umferð skipa í nærlandi Íslands. Ásgeir Erlendsson, upplýsingafulltrúi Landhelgisgæslunnar, segir að það væri hægt að fá meðalhorfið í verkefnum Gæslunnar hratt og að verkefnin væri ávallt í forgangi. Þar sem skipið Bandero er ekki innan landhelgi Íslands, hefur gæslan ekki heimild til að vísa þeim frá, en hún hefur undirbúið viðbrögð sem fer eftir því hvar skipið er statt. Hættir í afmælihátíðum hafa verið frestað og hátíðarhöldin verða færð fram á haustið með tímamótum í sögu Gæslunnar fagnað með formlegum hætti.
Skipið Bandero, sem er um borð í Aðgerð 86, hefur verið á siglingu við tólf mílna landhelgi Íslands síðustu daga. Samkvæmt upplýsingum frá fréttastofu hefur skipið stefnt í átt að hvalamiðum, en hættir í rannsóknum hafa verið ákvarðað í ljós á grundvelli umgæslu um hvalveiðar. Þrjú tilvik til rannsóknar hafa verið skoðað, þar sem grunur leikur á um að ekki hafi verið staðið með réttum hætti að veiðum. Rannsóknir standa enn yfir á atviki þar sem hvalur háði hálftíma dauðastríð, og vonir eru bundnar við að rannsókn ljúki í næstu viku. Það eru allavega þrjú tilfelli til sérstakrar skoðunar hvað varðar framkvæmd veiðanna.
Dómsmálaráðherra Þorbjörg S. Gunnlaugsdóttir segir að ógn fellinn í hótunum skipverjanna og að það muni aldrei líðast að menn komist upp með það að ætla að ógna velferð eða lífi íslenskra sjómanna við löglega atvinnu. Hún segir að kjornaatriðið hér er öryggi manna sem eru við störf í löglegri atvinnugrein og búa núna við hótanir erlendra aðila. Það er stóra markmiðið að verjast öryggi, velferð og líf manna sem þarna eru á hafi úti. Ef skipið siglir inn fyrir landhelgi Íslands, þá verða handtökur til greina og gæslan hefur heimild til að leiða skipið til hafnar eftir því sem þörd þykir á. Þegar alvarleikastigið er orðið það að það er verið að láta að því liggja eða segja það jafnvel með berum orðum að það eigi að stöðva þessar veiðar með öllum tiltækum ráðum, þá grípum við til aðgerða.
Rod Coronado, leiðangursstjóri Bandero, sem tók þátt í skemmdarverkunum 1986, segir að ekki komi til greina að stefna lífi eða heilsu skipverja á hvalveiðiskipunum eða Þór í hættu. Hann telur Íslendinga skammast sín fyrir hvalveiðar og meðferð á dýrunum sem að hans mati einkennist af vanvirðingu. Hann segir stjórnvöld geta stöðvaðför Bandero með því að stöðva hvalveiðar. Þorsteinn J. Jónasdóttir, yfirdýralæknir Matvælastofnunar, segur að rannsókn standi enn yfir á atviki þar sem hvalur háði hálftíma dauðastríð. Hún tekur fram að öll tilvik þar sem framkvæmd veiðanna uppfyllir ekki ákvæði reglugerðar um veiðar á langreyðum séu rannsökuð sérstaklega. Hún staðfestir að þrjú atvik séu til skoðunar. Eftirlitsmaður frá Matvælastofnun hefur verið um borð við veiðar á átta hvölum af þeim ellefu sem hafa verið veiddir hingað til. Hún segir að rannsókn ljúki í næstu viku.
