Religious education teacher banned after sending naked torso photo to student

A religious education teacher has been barred from working in schools or youth-related settings in England after sending a naked torso photo to a former student. The decision came following a hearing by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), which ruled that the actions of Thomas Wilson, 38, constituted inappropriate and potentially harmful behavior toward minors. Wilson, who worked as an assistant curriculum leader for religious education at St Thomas More RC College in Manchester, sent the explicit image to a former student named Student A in October 2023. At the time, Student A was under 18 years old. According to the TRA panel, Wilson had given Student A his mobile number during the summer of 2022 and invited her to meet up around Christmas that year. The panel further noted that Wilson had previously communicated with another former student, Student H, who was also under 18, through Facebook in September 2017. In one message, he asked Student H, “Have you got the house to yourself tonight? Xxx.” The TRA panel determined that Wilson's actions were not merely accidental or misinterpreted. It concluded that the messages and the photo were sent with a sexual intent. In the case of Student A, the panel stated that Wilson sent a photograph showing his naked torso and part of his groin area. He had claimed that the image was requested by Student A to showcase his gym progress, but the panel dismissed this explanation as implausible. Instead, it found that the act was likely driven by a desire for sexual gratification or a sexual relationship with the student. The panel emphasized that the communications with both students were sexually motivated and, in some cases, explicitly sexual in nature. It warned that such conduct could pose a serious risk to the safety and well-being of the students involved. The panel also highlighted that the public would find the behavior “abhorrent and wholly unacceptable.” As a result, Wilson was banned from teaching indefinitely in any educational setting in England, including schools, sixth form colleges, youth accommodations, and children’s homes. Wilson’s past employment history includes teaching at St Paul’s Catholic High School in Manchester, where Student A had previously studied. The TRA panel noted that the incident involving Student A occurred while he was still employed at St Thomas More RC College. His tenure there ended in April 2023, just months before the alleged misconduct took place. The panel’s findings underscored the severity of the situation, noting that the behavior exhibited by Wilson was not isolated. The repeated contact with underage students, combined with the explicit content of the messages and images, led to the determination that the conduct was not only inappropriate but also dangerous. The ban reflects the regulatory body’s commitment to protecting young people from abuse and exploitation within educational environments.
