Record: 8,202 takeovers in Austria

In 2025, Austria recorded a record number of business acquisitions, with 8,202 companies changing ownership, a figure surpassing all previous years since data collection began in 1998. This represents a 5.3 percent increase compared to the previous year, according to the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO). The rise marks another milestone in a trend of increasing corporate transitions, which has been steadily growing since 2021. Since 2021, more than 37,000 businesses have changed hands in Austria. The WKO estimates that approximately 52,500 small and medium-sized enterprises, excluding sole proprietorships, are available for transfer nationwide by 2034. These businesses account for roughly 23 percent of all employer companies in the country and are associated with around 705,000 jobs. The chamber has called for tax relief measures to support these transfers, emphasizing their economic significance. Currently, about 55 percent of all business transfers occur within families. However, this proportion is declining, indicating a shift toward non-family ownership structures. A study conducted by KMU Forschung Austria reveals that 61 percent of successors increase their turnover, while 60 percent make greater investments than their predecessors. In nearly half of the cases, employment levels remain stable, whereas 36 percent of businesses hire additional staff. The surge in business acquisitions reflects broader changes in the Austrian economy, driven by factors such as demographic shifts, evolving market demands, and strategic financial planning among entrepreneurs. As the aging population continues to influence succession patterns, the need for effective transition strategies becomes increasingly critical. The WKO’s call for tax incentives underscores the importance of facilitating smooth handovers to maintain continuity and growth. The data highlights both challenges and opportunities within the business community. While many owners successfully pass on their ventures, others face difficulties in finding suitable successors or managing the complexities of transferring assets and responsibilities. The study also notes that successful transitions often lead to increased investment and operational efficiency, suggesting a positive outlook for businesses undergoing change. Looking ahead, the projected number of potential transfers by 2034 indicates that the current trend will likely continue. With over 52,500 businesses set to become available for sale or transfer, the demand for professional advisory services, legal assistance, and financial planning is expected to grow. Industry experts anticipate that the focus on non-family transitions will intensify, reshaping traditional ownership models and fostering new business dynamics.
