The incident unfolded in the southern Puglia region, involving a local waste management company known as SANB, based in Bitonto near Bari. The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, initially checked her lottery ticket at a retail outlet on Sunday. The machine flagged the ticket as “non-payable,” a common occurrence due to limitations on small wins at smaller stores. Unaware of the larger prize, she returned home, only to learn from a family member that her usual numbers had won. Upon rushing back to the store, she discovered the ticket had already been discarded and the trash collected. In a desperate attempt to recover the lost ticket, she contacted Roberto Nicola Toscano, the administrator of SANB. Toscano recounted how they traced the ticket's path, knowing it had already been taken by a garbage truck. Despite the slim chances of recovery, given the potential dangers of handling hazardous materials in the waste, they identified the correct vehicle and halted its route. The retrieval process required taking the truck to a specialized facility capable of conducting such searches. Over the course of more than a day, workers sifted through the contents, uncovering numerous other tickets and stubs. Among these items was the sought-after stub, which remained intact despite being buried in the waste. Upon learning of the successful recovery, the woman expressed deep emotional relief. Toscano described the moment as one of profound satisfaction, noting that while he would have embraced her in person, the reunion occurred over the phone. The operation, though ultimately successful, carried financial implications. As a public agency, SANB typically covers such expenses using taxpayer funds. However, in this case, the woman was asked to sign a commitment to cover all additional costs incurred during the search. This arrangement proved beneficial, as the ticket was successfully recovered without further complications.
