George Madgwick, 37, the leader of the Reform UK group on Hampshire County Council, has been charged with 12 counts of rape and numerous other offenses, including distributing indecent images of a child. The Crown Prosecution Service stated that the charges stem from a police investigation involving four complainants, with the alleged incidents occurring in Portsmouth and Wales between 2008 and 2021. Madgwick, who serves as a councillor in Portsmouth and previously participated in local protests regarding asylum seekers, was arrested in London in January. He is scheduled to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on 25 November. Reform UK announced that Madgwick has been suspended from the party immediately. Bridget Phillipson, chair of the Labour Party, criticized the situation, demanding that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage clarify if he was aware of the allegations while Madgwick held a position within the party.
Bias read (Progressive): The inclusion of a critical quote from the Labour Party chair questioning the Reform leader's awareness creates a partisan framing typical of left-leaning outlets covering right-wing figures.
