Recent Rain Slowed Southwestern Montana Wildfires. Now the Heat Is Returning.

The fire burned through the Maverick Mountain Ski Area and threatened nearby Elkhorn Hot Springs before mid-August rains helped slow its advance. Although the rain allowed firefighters to reinforce their containment lines, the fire had already inflicted significant damage on the ski area. Mariah Leuschen-Lonergan, fire communications lead for the Forest Service in the Northern Rockies, explained that the initial conditions for the Sand Creek Fire were ideal for rapid growth. Temperatures reached between 90 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, with relative humidity in the single digits and strong winds. These factors combined with abundant fuel and favorable terrain contributed to the fire's explosive spread. Erik Borge, owner and operator of Maverick Mountain, confirmed via a social media statement that the ski area's base structures and snowcat vehicles were spared, but the only chairlift suffered extensive damage and will likely remain inoperable for the upcoming ski season. He expressed uncertainty about the future of the facility, stating, “At this point, our road forward is undefined.” Montana officials are exploring ways to mitigate future wildfire risks.
