Guesses about missing NIS2 registrations

The number of organizations, authorities, and other entities required by the NIS2 Implementation Act to register under the NIS2 regime with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) remains significantly below legislative estimates. Instead of the expected 29,500 registrations, only 18,845 were reported as of the new deadline last Friday. The BSI identified 6,490 'particularly important facilities' and 12,355 'important facilities'. The federal government had anticipated around half more registrations based on a statistical office estimate. A BSI spokesperson noted this level as generally satisfactory but acknowledged that some entities have not fully complied with legal obligations. Registration numbers remained low since March when registration was opened, with only 11,500 registrants at the original deadline. The BSI acknowledges complexities in determining compliance, especially for complex corporate structures, and extended the registration period until last Friday. The Interior Ministry has tasked the Statistical Office (Destatis) with rechecking the number of registration-required entities. Critics argue that the threat of cybersecurity risks is still not widely gras
