'Vanishingly rare' copy of U.S. Declaration of Independence unearthed in UK archives

A rare surviving copy of the United States Declaration of Independence has been discovered in the archives of The National Archives in the United Kingdom. This document, believed to be among the earliest printed versions of the historic text, was uncovered during ongoing restoration efforts. The British warship HMS Raisonable captured the American vessel Dalton off the coast of Portugal after a prolonged chase lasting several hours. Saul Nassé, the chief executive of The National Archives, described the discovery as “an extraordinary finding.” He emphasized that the document’s survival outside of the United States makes it particularly significant. “It’s a vanishingly rare surviving copy of the Declaration of Independence, found not in America, but here in the UK,” he remarked.

Dr. Graham Moore, also from The National Archives, noted that the document represents one of the rarest known copies of the Declaration. He explained that these early versions were not intended for long-term preservation. “After the original printing on 4 July, the news of the Declaration is traveling fast around North America and its being reprinted as it reaches each successive colony,” Dr. Moore stated. He further clarified that the copy in question is one of only 11 surviving examples from the initial print run in New Hampshire.
