'Rapid, rigorous investigations': NTA revamps top ranks, creates new roles to probe exam malpractices

Following a recent controversy involving leaked examination papers, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has initiated a comprehensive recruitment drive titled “Build New NTA.” This initiative focuses on filling senior and specialist roles in critical areas such as cybersecurity, vigilance, test-center operations, research, data analysis, and communications. Applications for these positions were open until August 21, 2026, marking a significant step toward institutional reform within the agency. The recruitment drive follows heightened scrutiny of NTA’s examination processes, particularly after the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak incident led to the cancellation and re-conduct of the May 3 exam. In response, NTA has prioritized enhancing security measures and improving operational efficiency. The agency is actively seeking experienced professionals and young talent to bolster its capabilities in managing large-scale examinations, ensuring transparency, and maintaining public trust. Among the key roles being filled are four General Manager-level positions on contract, each with a three-year tenure. These include the General Manager for Assessment, Research & Development and Psychometrics; Test Centre Network & Operations; Information Security (with the holder serving as Chief Information Security Officer); and Vigilance, Investigation & Forensics. These appointments are not routine administrative roles but rather strategic hires aimed at reinforcing the agency’s ability to safeguard the examination process. The General Manager for Test Centre Network & Operations (GM-TCNO) will oversee the nationwide test-center network, encompassing more than 500 cities and selected international locations. Responsibilities include setting standards, planning capacity, and ensuring quality across all centers. This role is crucial for maintaining consistent performance and minimizing disruptions during high-stakes examinations. The General Manager for Information Security (CISO) will lead cybersecurity initiatives, ensuring robust protection of sensitive data and systems. This includes establishing a 24x7 Security Operations Center (SOC) and adhering to regulatory requirements such as the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and guidance from CERT-In and MeitY. The CISO will also monitor third-party vendors to ensure compliance with security protocols. The General Manager for Vigilance, Investigation & Forensics (GM-VIF) will spearhead investigations into allegations of malpractice, including paper leaks, impersonation, and fraud. This role involves collaborating with agencies such as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Enforcement Directorate (ED), and state police. The GM-VIF will also build a digital forensics framework to track cyber threats and analyze financial trails, aiming to dismantle networks engaged in examination misconduct. Beyond security, NTA is expanding its focus to include research and data analytics. A Researcher position is being offered to establish a credible academic foundation for the agency’s policies and communications. Additionally, a Data Analyst-cum-Media Monitoring Executive role is being introduced to convert insights from public sentiment and media coverage into actionable intelligence, enabling proactive decision-making during examination cycles. This recruitment drive reflects a broader strategy to transform NTA into a more transparent, secure, and data-driven organization. By integrating specialized roles and fostering collaboration with external agencies, the agency aims to address past shortcomings and regain public confidence in its examination processes. The initiative underscores NTA’s commitment to institutional renewal and long-term sustainability in its mission to conduct fair and reliable assessments for millions of students.
