Work and official tenure suspended: One Bridger leaves too

The Croatian Parliament has witnessed significant changes following a decision made by the Mandatno-imunitetno povjerenstvo (Mandate and Immunity Committee) on Friday. The committee unanimously approved the initiation of the retirement of Furio Radin’s parliamentary mandate at his personal request, as well as the end of the suspension of Ivan Matić's mandate, who will now take over the position previously held by Ivica Ledenko. This move is described by officials within the Most party as an internal agreement among its members.

Furio Radin, a long-standing member of parliament representing the Italian national minority and currently serving as the second president of the Croatian Parliament, decided to retire from his role due to personal reasons. He has been a member of the parliament for 34 years and has won ten elections so far. His seat in the House will be taken over by Marin Corva, who was Radin’s deputy candidate on the list for the 12th electoral unit in the previous election two years ago.

Robert Jankovics, the chairman of the Mandate and Immunity Committee, highlighted Radin’s long political career, noting that he has consistently secured victory in multiple elections. In response, Ante Deur from the HDZ party humorously compared Radin’s success to that of football star Luka Modrić, emphasizing his enduring influence and effectiveness in politics.

Ivica Ledenko, who was elected in the 9th electoral unit, will no longer serve as a substitute representative. Instead, Ivan Matić will take over Ledenko’s position after the latter’s mandate ends. Matić received 506 preference votes in the 2024 elections, while Ledenko secured 745. According to the party, this transition represents a mutual agreement between the two representatives to exchange roles halfway through their mandates. This arrangement allows both individuals to continue their political careers under new circumstances, ensuring continuity in their respective constituencies.

The departure of Furio Radin marks a notable shift in the composition of the Croatian Parliament, particularly given his extensive tenure and influential role. As one of the longest-serving members, his exit leaves a void that must be filled by someone new, such as Marin Corva, who steps into a prominent role with the backing of his former mentor.
