ARRachel Ikemeh, a Nigerian conservationist, has been awarded the Rolex Awards 2026 for her work in protecting a unique ecosystem in southern Nigeria. Through community-driven conservation efforts, she helped preserve biodiversity in the Niger Delta region, which is part of the West African Guinean forests, a global biodiversity hotspot. The area, home to the third-largest mangrove forest in the world, had suffered from oil spills and river contamination, leading to overfishing and deforestation. Ikemeh’s project, the South-West/Niger Delta Forest Project, established a protected area of over 1,000 hectares in Apoi village in 2021. With support from Rolex, she now aims to replicate this success in neighboring communities. The awards, celebrating their 50th anniversary, recognize individuals whose projects enhance planetary knowledge, protect the environment, and conserve habitats.
