At least seven Airbus aircraft have experienced technical failures involving faulty fire buttons and unexpected engine shutdowns since 2016, according to a confidential internal communication released by the manufacturer. The incidents occurred across multiple models, including six A320 series planes and one A350, with pilots often unaware of the issue during flight. The problem stems from a manufacturing defect in the fire button mechanism, which can disengage spontaneously due to deformation and wear of a retaining pin. This causes the red safety guard to rise, leading to an abrupt and unintended engine shutdown. In most cases, the crew was not immediately aware of the malfunction, complicating their ability to respond effectively. The detailed findings were shared with airlines via a confidential operational notice issued on July 22, which outlined the mechanical anomaly affecting certain Airbus models. The document, addressed to operators of A318, A319, A320, A321, A330, A340, A350, and A380 aircraft, explained how the fire button’s disengagement could occur independently of any actual fire situation. It noted that the button’s protective cover would lift without illumination, making diagnosis difficult for the flight crew. Only in one instance did a member of the cabin staff recognize the issue promptly and manually reinsert the command, allowing the flight to continue normally. Safran, the component manufacturer, identified the root cause of the failure through its analysis. The defective mechanism featured a bent and significantly worn retaining pin, which reduced its ability to hold the button in place. This allowed the device to disengage progressively under the vibrations encountered during flight. According to Safran, the damage was not caused by wear during service but rather by improper handling prior to installation, such as impacts or drops of the button or entire panel. These conditions could lead to structural deformation before the component was mounted onto the aircraft. In response to the risk of recurrence, particularly during critical phases like takeoff or landing, Airbus has issued strict operational guidelines. Pilots are now prohibited from manually testing the fire buttons to assess their integrity, as repeated stress increases wear on the retaining pin. This precaution aims to prevent further disengagements and ensure safer operation of affected aircraft. Airbus and its supplier have already established protocols for monitoring, inspection, and replacement of the affected panels. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has mandated that airlines replace high-risk panels within six months of November 6, 2025, while requiring comprehensive inspections of potentially impacted fleets within two years. Although statistical probability suggests the likelihood of such an incident remains low, seven documented cases among approximately 13,000 to 14,000 aircraft, the combination of a silent failure and lack of immediate cockpit warning has prompted heightened vigilance from regulators and aviation unions.
