Kharge calls Madhya Pradesh ‘epicentre of corruption’, cites alleged ₹1,200-crore rice scamt

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has intensified his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following reports of an alleged ethanol scam in Madhya Pradesh. In a recent social media post, Kharge accused the BJP government of orchestrating a widespread scheme involving the misappropriation of subsidized rice intended for critical nutritional programs. He claimed that the state has become synonymous with corruption and exploitation under the ruling party’s governance. Kharge stated that the public's rightful grain is being looted with the complicity of the BJP and its administrative apparatus. According to him, Madhya Pradesh has emerged as the epicenter of corruption and plunder, where one scandal barely concludes before another emerges. A Rs 1,200 crore rice scam linked to ethanol production has recently surfaced, diverting rice meant for malnourished children, pregnant women, and adolescent girls into a profit-driven operation. Approximately five lakh metric tons of rice have reportedly been siphoned off through the collusion of rice millers, the ethanol industry, and the BJP administration. The controversy arose after the Food Corporation of India (FCI) filed a complaint regarding a shipment of rice destined for an ethanol plant in Chhindwara that failed to reach its intended location. This led to the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) to probe potential irregularities in the distribution of subsidized rice. So far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, with multiple allegations pointing toward the diversion of rice allocated under a subsidy program aimed at boosting ethanol production for blending with petroleum. Kharge further pointed out previous allegations concerning land acquisition practices under the leadership of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. He mentioned that significant land expansions occurred in regions designated for government infrastructure projects and highway corridors, raising doubts about the integrity of the Chief Minister himself. These developments have fueled concerns about systemic corruption within the state administration, with Kharge asserting that every department appears to be engaged in self-serving activities. He emphasized that the pattern of corruption in Madhya Pradesh dates back to the Vyapam scandal, which had previously exposed extensive malfeasance. Despite numerous instances of corruption and the exposure of several cases, Kharge argued that the BJP has transformed the state into a model of graft. He criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP national president Amit Shah for their perceived lack of accountability, suggesting that they have undermined the principles of transparency and responsibility in public life through their exercise of power. As the situation unfolds, the focus remains on the outcomes of the ongoing investigations and the potential implications for both the BJP and the affected communities.
