Authentic displays of old trades and craftsmanship at Legenda.fest

A festival celebrating traditional crafts and old-time skills took place in Breginj, Slovenia, drawing locals and visitors alike with its immersive display of heritage practices and regional cuisine. The event, organized by the Development Association of Breginj Coast, was based on a long-standing idea and project by Vide Škvor. It aimed to reconnect residents and guests through demonstrations of traditional work methods, handcrafts, and local cooking, evoking memories of life as it was known in the past. According to Nataša Baloh, the head of the event, preparations had started several days before the main day. Local women were reintroduced to old recipes and prepared traditional dishes characteristic of Breginj’s cuisine. On the grassy fields, locals gathered hay and prepared for the demonstration of making kope, a traditional type of bread. The festival offered a wide range of activities centered around preserving and showcasing the region's cultural legacy. The event featured a variety of traditional foods, including krompirjovka, a dish made from potatoes similar to polenta, and bela močenje, a white stew once commonly prepared by housewives. Visitors could sample other local delicacies and discover the culinary richness of the area. The program began with a demonstration of spinning wool, followed by a presentation of the craft of basket weaving. A significant amount of interest was generated by the display of historical items from Breginj and the process of shoemaking. Additional attractions included stalls offering local products such as honey and herbs, along with demonstrations of shearing sheep and crafting woven and felted goods. The festival highlighted the deep connection within the community and emphasized how cultural heritage continues to shape the present and future of Breginj. According to Baloh, events like these thrive because of individuals who selflessly share their knowledge with others and pass it down to younger generations. She noted that without the contributions of numerous volunteers, such gatherings would not be possible. The organizers stressed that the success of the festival relied on the collaboration of all societies in Breginj and many local residents who contributed their time, effort, and preparation to demonstrate the strength of communal ties. The festival served as a platform for artisans and craftsmen to showcase their skills, while also providing an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with traditional practices.
