Prison sentences finalized for pair who blackmailed Son Heung-min with false pregnancy claim

A woman in her 20s and her male accomplice, a man in his 40s, were sentenced to four and two years in prison respectively for blackmailing South Korean football star Son Heung-min with a false pregnancy claim. The woman, who had previously extorted 300 million won from Son in June 2024 by threatening to expose the fabricated claim, did not appeal her four-year sentence, which became final after the appeals court upheld it. Her accomplice initially appealed his two-year sentence but the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal, finalizing the sentence. Both were also convicted of attempting to extort an additional 70 million won by threatening to reveal the false pregnancy and an alleged abortion to the media and Son’s family between March and May of last year, though this attempt failed. The pair, who were in a romantic relationship, were indicted while in custody in June 2025. The trial court noted that Son likely experienced significant emotional distress from the crime, and the appeals court confirmed the sentences without reducing them.
