Ksenija Urličić, one of Croatia’s most influential television producers and former head of the entertainment department at HRT, has died. She was known for her work with both HRT and RTZ, where she spent nearly half a century before retiring in 2001. Her career began in 1958, and over the years, she rose through all major roles, from anchoring and hosting to producing and managing the entertainment division. She graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb and became a key figure in Croatian broadcasting history. Urličić joined RTZ/HTV in 1959 and remained active until her retirement. She co-created and hosted several early radio contact programs, including Zeleni megaherc, Četvrtkom zajedno, Nedjeljni semafor, and Plavi pingvin. As a top-tier anchor, she led some of the most important informational broadcasts of the old Zagreb Television, including the central Dnevnik program. From 1991 onward, as head of the Entertainment-Music Program, she launched a series of shows based primarily on domestic entertainment music production, especially during the Homeland War, focusing on patriotic songs. She was the author of numerous large-scale projects, often serving as both writer and host, particularly during the Homeland War. In that period, she also promoted live telephone games with viewers, notably in the 1991/92 holiday season. She created the largest-ever entertainment spectacle, Sedmа noć (Seven Nights), which aired 200 episodes, and produced the first comedy series for HTV, Jel’ me netko tražio? (Has Anyone Seen Me?). She authored programs such as Vinkovci su i jeseni jesu and Vukovar kao svjetlost emitiranih within the Za slobodu (For Freedom) program. Urličić also founded the Croatian TV Festival in Opatija and was the creator and organizer of the project Hrvatska pjesma za pjesmu Europe (Croatian Song for the Eurovision Song Contest) from 1993 to 2000. As a producer, she developed titles and wrote scripts for shows such as U duhu gosta (In the Spirit of the Guest), Večeras s vama (Tonight With You), Cro Pop Rock, Nek’ zvone tambure (Let the Drums Ring), Opera Box, Jazz oko ponoći (Jazz Around Midnight), Radar, Ispod duge (Under the Rainbow), Fluid Expo, and Iz stare škrinje (From an Old Chest), among others. She received the annual HRT award in 1996 for her contributions to Croatian media. Known affectionately as the "Steel Lady," this nickname reflected her strict discipline, dedication, and demanding approach to managing large teams. Despite the moniker, she once explained that it did not reflect her true personality. She admitted to being loud at times but emphasized that it stemmed from a desire to ensure major television projects were executed properly. Working with crews of up to 250 people, coordination was essential, and she would raise her voice when things deviated from the plan. However, she noted that after successful projects, everyone would embrace and forget minor conflicts. Her professional reputation was built on insistence on discipline, devotion to her work, and a firm leadership style. Colleagues remember her as someone who knew exactly what each person on her team was doing and what they needed to accomplish. While she had a reputation for being tough, her colleagues acknowledged that her demands were driven by a deep commitment to quality and excellence in broadcasting. Urličić's legacy includes shaping the landscape of Croatian entertainment programming, especially during challenging periods like the Homeland War, where she used media as a tool for national unity and morale. Her influence extended beyond television into cultural initiatives, such as organizing the Croatian participation in the Eurovision Song Contest, which helped elevate Croatian music on international stages. Her passing marks the end of an era in Croatian broadcasting. Those who worked alongside her remember her as a formidable yet passionate leader whose vision left an indelible mark on the industry. The exact cause of her death has not been disclosed, but tributes have poured in from colleagues, fans, and institutions across the country.
