Prayers will crush Boko Haram, Borno Catholic bishop says

Most Reverend Oliver Dashe, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese in Borno State, urged Christians to intensify prayers in the ongoing battle against Boko Haram, asserting that such spiritual efforts hold the power to defeat the militant group. Speaking during a church session marking the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Maiduguri, the bishop emphasized the role of faith-based actions in restoring stability to the region. The bishop noted that Borno State had recently experienced a period of relative peace following over a decade of conflict with Boko Haram. He acknowledged that while prayer plays a crucial role, he stressed the necessity of continued individual and governmental efforts to achieve lasting security. Dashe highlighted the significance of the church session, describing it as an important occasion for the Catholic community and acknowledging the influence of the Virgin Mary in the lives of people within the diocese. During his address, Dashe recounted his 17 years as bishop and credited the intercession of the Virgin Mary for the progress witnessed in the diocese. He outlined various devotional practices undertaken by the faithful, including reciting the rosary, wearing miraculous medals, and visiting pilgrimage sites to reconsecrate the diocese, families, and individuals to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. These acts, he explained, were meant to deepen spiritual connection and seek divine guidance. In discussing the role of prayer in countering insecurity, Dashe reiterated that Christians must remain vigilant through committed prayer. He underscored that while faith provides strength, practical action is equally essential. “From the religious angle, we know that prayers will crush Boko Haram,” he said, adding that believers should combine spiritual devotion with active participation in societal well-being. Dashe attributed the current calm in Borno to the intercessory power of the Virgin Mary, citing the return of displaced residents and their renewed dedication to worship as evidence of divine intervention. He pointed out that the region faced severe turmoil nearly 17 years ago, which has since transformed into a more tranquil environment. The bishop expressed gratitude for the peace achieved thus far, crediting the Virgin Mary's influence in facilitating this change. Despite recognizing the positive developments, Dashe urged the government at both federal and state levels to support security forces in their operations against Boko Haram. He called for increased resources and coordination to enable law enforcement to target terrorist hideouts effectively. “I call on the government… to ensure that security personnel are able to go to the forest and mountains in order to fetch these terrorists,” he said, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts between religious communities and authorities. As the bishop concluded, he reaffirmed the importance of unity between faith and governance in maintaining public safety.
